Being aware of it is a good first step, because you can now make your self-individuating optional as opposed to automatic. Meaning you need to start catching yourself falling into your previous habits and making a choice of whether or not to give in to them. Choosing to obey them or deny yourself this impulse gives you the power back over your own unconscious drives and motivations. 4s often try to create scenarios in which they remain frustrated, because they see that as a means of distinguishing themselves from other people, who are too easily satisfied in life. The 4 feels envy about this quality, but also disdainful of it. This disdainful attitude can be off-putting to others, thus creating separation from them and validating the 4’s unconscious belief that they will never be truly understood (and do not want to be fully comprehended; they need to be mysterious and “other” to exist). Pretentiousness (it fits 4w3 more than 4w5 due to the 3’s over-inflation of their talent; but a 4w5 can become over-arrogant about their intelligence) is to take on an air of importance and talent beyond your actual skill set. A 4 wants to seek the emotional truth of a situation – you can use this skill to honestly look at yourself and determine your actual abilities and skill levels, which will bring some humility into your approach to life. Humility comes with time and a willingness to be broken, something a 4 is able to do; the key is to allow yourself to be broken, to be humbled, and then realize you can recover from it rather than crafting it into your sense of being separate and unknown.
